So you may have heard of the National Do Not Call List, which came into effect in Canada on September 30, 2008. Basically, you add your home and/or cell phone number(s) to this list (which is run by the CRTC - which is run by the Canadian Government), and most telemarketers are blocked from calling you (I believe only registered charities are exempt and call still call you).
Well, turns out there's a big problem with the Do Not Call List. There is a report on CBC.ca today which reveals that the CRTC has been whoring itself out - selling all of the numbers on the DNC List. In fact, you can buy 600,000 phone numbers online for only $50 - what a steal!
I myself have been a victim of this - I registered my cell phone, my wife's cell phone, and our home phone on the list. While our home and my cell phone are getting about the same number of "junk calls", my wife's cell phone is getting a minimum of two calls per night now. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm not sure what the procedure is on this, but I hope that the incompetent CRTC is severely punished.
